Mom and Dad's Wedding Announcement

In going through Nana's momentos, I found this. I am always amazing by what she still kept. She and I sat together while she ruthlessly parsed out old photos, giving them to children and nieces or nephews, or just straight to the bin. Before she moved to Bothell, she was feeling particularly unsentimental about objects, but this gem she kept. Or at least, she allowed me to "hold on to it for her" at my house.
Preecs-Warner Wed

Buried in other albums are choice photos from the wedding itself, including the remarkable pink tuxedo. I just think it's lovely that this treasured clipping still exists. Especially given Nana's fondness for newspaper clippings.

Short sweet nothings

Another round of vignettes from our life.

The third of 4 weddings was over the weekend. We got to show up early, help with the set-up and generally goof off with the groom's part of the wedding party. It was a beautiful spot in the woodsy part of Skagit county, and I got to catch up with some old friends from high school.

The fourth wedding will be next weekend in Toronto. Matt won't be joining me (see last entry on Death Valley).

We have an apple tree.
Like all the things in our garden, it must learn to thrive with a steady pace of benign neglect. It was pruned last year, and had precious little attention since then.
Wednesday night, we pulled down 60 pounds of apples. From the fruit left on the tree, I expect another 60 lbs.
Matt wants to press and ferment these. I would be happy to make a lot of applesauce. We will see what gets accomplished before we both leave town again.

I defended my PhD more than 3 years ago. Pretty cool right? Every so often, I will ask myself if I miss benchwork, and if I should go back and do a post-doc. This is important, because many types of funding for postdocs are only available for 5 years after defense. I still don't feel like going back to the bench, but I was reminded on another type of fellowship that is only available for 5 years after defense. It's a science policy fellowship. My application is due at the end of the month.

My work has gotten "busy." To help my boss during a course of medical leave, I was assigned to project manage a small contract to create educational simulations. Fortunately for her, my boss has had much more energy and enthusiasm for her work than anyone has predicated. As a result, but job is not busy with decision making and leadership, but composing and waiting for replies to emails that need to be coordinated. This is less glamorous than I expected.

I've been lifting weights some this summer. I have a set of hobbyist weights that Shaoshu gave me when he moved. My big lifts (squats, deadlift, bench press) are just moving into the range of weight that would allow me to put weight on the 45 lb Olympic weight bar at a normal gym.
That's kinda cool.

Mosaic of Happenings

A few short notes of no special relevance, in no particular order:

I rode my bike to work on Friday.
Matt rides his bike in every day- the 7 mile trip takes him 20-25 min each way.
My 9+ mile trip took about an hour.
My friend Adam drove me home, so we could begin our weekend adventures. Next time, tomorrow, I will be driving my bike past some of the scary/trafficy part of the ride, and still probably riding 6ish miles, in 45 min or so. But I have to ride home, too.

* * *

I've been running "a lot"* lately. I bought some new trail running shoes, since my knees report my old ones were wearing out. The first pair I bought were super light weight, looked like a unicorn puked them up (vibrant reds, purples and yellows all swirled together), and made my toes fall asleep when I ran. I traded them in for a blue pair that look like keds skate shoes. The new ones meet the approval of both my knees and toes. And ankles.

*I can claim to be running a lot based on my current Strava standings. Strava is an app that tracks your mileage, records, etc, and lets you virtually race others. I've joined a "how many miles can you run this month?" challenge every month this summer, and I've been in the  top half every time. That's right- I run more than some people!

* * *

This year we were invited to 4 weddings, 3 of them in August.
One of Matt's old roommates got married a couple weekends ago. They found a beautiful castle/B&B in Tacoma to get married in. They rented out the whole B&B for thier family, but most of the family decided to make the drive home after, so we got to stay in the castle over night.
Castle weddings are awesome.
Also, macaroons are a legit substitute for wedding cake, especially (but not only) if you are marrying a French person.

This weekend, we did a hike to Mt Shuksan and Lake Ann.The trail was storybook perfect, with long meandering creeks that had wide, flat, not-slippery stones at easy points across them, and switch backs that gently climbed us the ~2,000 feet over a ridge.
The appeal of Mt Shuksan is that there are glaciers there. I haven't seen a lot of glaciers not in Alaska. Mt Shuksan has "hanging glaciers." We tried to guess how a hanging glacier was different, and I wondered why one mountain would have more than one glacier.
The actual view looked like some bits of a big glacier were stuck on the side of this mountain- so little compared to glacier attached to ice fields.
Still totally worth the hike.

We also saw some pika.

For Labor Day weekend, I am going to a wedding in Toronto, and Matt is going to spend two weeks in Death Valley doing "summer testing" of a truck. I assume this means they stress test the truck- driving it hot and hard in the worst possible climate to see if they can kill it. This seems like the weirdest possible way to explore Death Valley, but I'm really excited for Matt to go on this trip.

I'm also excited for when he comes back- we might actually spend a weekend in our own house.
Or we might go camping. With mountain bikes.
I'm excited for both options.

Visit home!

Matt and I are leaving tomorrow for a week in Juneau, for One Last Trip to the Ol' Homestead... but mostly because one of Matt's besties is getting married.  We are very excited for them- they are adorable together and it's going to be a great Juneau wedding.  I want to specify that the few details I have heard about the wedding make think it's going to be a Juneau wedding- they are getting married at the Thane Ore House (converted mine, now local fish feed place), the mother of the groom is leaving her car at the ferry terminal for the band to drive themselves in on and the bride asked for help picking wildflowers for her bouqet.  Right?  You wish you were coming to this wedding too...

While Matt is going to be adventuring around with all the assembled friends all week, I am taking a working vacation- hoping to put in some hours on my current contract.  And can we talk about how much I dig this contract? The work is really enjoyable- I spent this week reviewing new material and then coming up with test questions to assess the learning objectives.  Learning AND being creative, brilliant!  And the work is pretty high through-put, I get assigned tasks from an unending list of things to do, and most tasks are 1-3 hours.  I feel like I am accomplishing things, which is great!  The bulk of the content is IT related, which you might think I would feel underqualified for.  (I'm not OVERqualified, it's true.)  But having spent so many years thinking about educational standards and assessment, I actually feel like I have something unique to offer.  At least I feel like I've come up to speed pretty quickly.  The other awesome side of this work is I am finally in a position where I need to find one of those people who helps you figure out what you are going to do come tax time, is this an accountant or a financial adviser in my case?  Yeah, I've got self-employment problems.

So I will be working as much as I can stand, and Kelsey is coming in, and Mom and Dad are moving and it promises to be a pretty wild week.

I'm in San Diego

Hey,

So I may not have called this out to anyone, but I'm in San Diego this weekend at Derek's wedding. You know, my best man from my wedding. I got in early to attend a bachelor party thing on Friday, but that kinda fell through. So instead, today, Jess and I went to SeaWorld.

Jess had never gone before, and I have, but it was YEARS ago, so it doesn't really count. It was really fantastic. The Killer Whale show was spectacular, very dramatic with big leaps and amazing stunts, and a lot of splashing that we avoided by sitting up high. There was also a show with sea lions (and an adorable otter) that was really funny and pretty impressive with stunts.

Lots of sea life to see, too. My favorites where the ones where we got to touch things: rays and starfish, mostly. There were some neat exotic fish, too, and we got to see seahorses eating, sucking up little sea monkeys. We were there for the manatee feeding, too. They had 50 or so heads of lettuce in the tank with them and the critters were just NOM-NOM-NOMing away. Very cute.

Jessie's favorite moment was when we realized that the Splash-mountain-esque roller coaster that had been closed all day had just been started up right when we were nearby. So Jess and I went by and rode it twice with no lines at all. Lucky us! We got pretty wet and had a lot of fun on that ride, even though it was a little odd. We were supposed to be on an 'adventure through Atlantis' where we were deciding the fate of the doomed city. Evidently our riding of this coaster was VERY important to the lords of the sea, and we were heroes for braving the challenge. I thought it was just a roller coaster, but evidently I was mistaken.

We've been eating in Downtown San Diego, by coincidence of personal geography, and both times Jess wanted to go to the same place. Franks Mexican Cafe (wonderful fish tacos) and then the Ghirardelli shop for dessert: Hot Fudge Sunday. Delish.

Anyway, it's late, so I'm going to relax for a bit and sleep and then go to a rehersal and then maybe drive up to LA and then go to a wedding and then go home and set up my studio. Oh yes, that is happening too.

Our Wedding, Part 7

The final piece! The ultimate movie! The last thingy I'm going to make with iMovie this weekend. The transformation of this website from 'Preecs Place' to 'Noel's Movie Heaven' is complete, and I still haven't caught up to Sandlin's post count!

-N

Our Wedding, Part 6

Okay, just a few more. There was so much dancing and other celebratory acts that I had to make it into two more. The last one is actually finished, though, so I'll post it in just a second, giving you the complete set!

-N

Our Wedding, Part 5

This video is just the toasts from our wedding. We really liked them, so we just posted the whole darn thing. Enjoy!

-N

Our Wedding, Part 4

Another! This one is wedding part 4, but only reception part 1. The toasts were so nice that we thought we'd just post the whole darn thing, so that will be part 5, up in just a few more minutes. It's like LIVE TV out here!

-N

Our Wedding, Part 3

Here's the actual wedding, the part with the walking up and music and everything. You know, the *serious* part. More coming, probably more even today! So keep checking back.

-N

Our Wedding, Part 2

Hello,

Here's the preparations for the wedding, at least all preparations caught on our video camera. It's really nice to go through all this again, I'll have to watch these videos every once in a while to remind myself how awesome my wedding was. Thanks again to everyone who helped out and showed up. Hope you enjoy the videos.

It might not show up for a little while, but that should contain part 1 of the wedding video, the preparations, meeting, rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Simple, but effective. Enjoy!

Yes, we're home

Hey,

Just so everyone knows, we're back from our extended holiday of marriage and honeymooning, safe and sound. Overall, the wedding and honeymoon were an enormous success, with one notable and kinda scary exception. But we're fine, hale, hearty, and happy to be home. There will be videos, pictures and stories upcoming, but I'm tired, catching up on news, and my Mac is still chewing on the camera data. It's coming, though.

Noel Got Married!

And he was pretty darn good at it too. While the newlyweds are off enjoying the adventures of a fabulous trip to Costa Rica (!) I thought I'd start posting a few photos that we took home for everyone to enjoy.

I especially like this picture, because it shows how bursting-out-of-his-skin happy Noel was. I've put together a first pass, small scale collection of the photos off our camera and posted them here. I expect there will be more posting and sharing of photos as everyone else gets home and settled.

Dress Help!

Noel's wedding is just DAYS away, and I am sure we are all wondering the same thing. What am I going to wear? Well, perhaps I am the only one who waited this long. Go check out my album of the few candidates. And Kelso- the brown shoes are at the end.

Album is here.

Please help!

Soon!

T-minus one week until I get married. I'm so excited!

We've pretty much got everything all planned, and the big stuff has been in place for quite a while. We're getting to Florida a couple of days early to try and iron out any last-minute details that inevitably show up when trying to organize something complicated like this. But we've got all the pieces supposedly in place, and so with luck, everything should go just fine.

So it's the -1 week anneversery and jess and I celebrated by taking a nap. We've been making calls here-and-there to make sure that all the stuff that is supposed to be happening is happening. Yay for that.

Also, a very, very big thank you to everyone who is traveling from far and wide to come to our wedding. It's really nice of everyone to come.

Just a few more days and we'll be on our way. See everyone soon!

I'm a TA

I FINALLY got my teaching assignment official on Monday. I'll be TAing Molecular Genetics lab- two sections that meet for 5 hours once a week (I meet with them for 10). I'll be prepping and assisting mostly, this sounds light on the lectures, and about my speed of science actually. The instructor, we'll call him Twombles, seems like a reasonable guy if chatty. A lot of the undergrads in our lab are in it, and there are only 12 students per section, which is a pretty good deal.

I have a couple qualms about the class- it is to be moved back into a newly renovated space that is only going to be available to us at most a week before class starts. One week to move in all the glassware and chemicals, fill the drawers, and get the room organized. And let the dust settle so it can be "sterile." Since other classes are taught in the space I expect that this week will be crazy, but then it will pretty much have to be fixed (and not by me) very quickly. The other is that the course was designed by my least favorite faculty of all. In typical old faculty style, the entire course is outlined in great detail, in his head. He has been moved to a more administrative position, so he is no longer teaching the course, but - the instructor assures me- no other changes are being made to the course design. So I am a little fuzzy on whether there are assignments, and how the experiments are meant to be done, but Twombles is confident we can work through these things. I am confident it is not my responsibility to design course work, so this should work.

I mentioned Twombles is a reasonable guy- he practically insisted I take the time to go to Noel and Jessie's wedding (I was worried when I heard it was a Friday lab), and the Thanksgiving trip won't overlap at all. Teaching starts at the end of August, so you can expect to hear much more about this in the coming months.

Weekend in florida

Jess and I spent the weekend away from Austin in Florida, seeing family and doing little odds and ends to plan for the wedding. We arrived in Florida Thursday evening and pretty much just had some dinner and then fell asleep. But the nephews were, as always, totally adorable and obsessed with the DS. They're cute when they play, Jess says they remind her of me. :)

Friday we did a bunch of stuff, went by the location again to change some little details and meet the new person in charge (Her name is Sherry, and she's pretty nice) as well as getting our florists (the Mom and Sister) a chance to check the place out and plan their floral extravaganza. We also went by the local supermarket, Publix, to order our wedding cake. There was a very nice lady there who, evidently, is in charge of cakes, and she explained the whole process and took our order and was, all in all, quite nice. So that's one more thing down. Anything else I'm missing?

Friday was also BBQ and fireworks day. In the great traditions of families everywhere, we all got together and ate way too much food and set off fireworks. Good times were had by all. Also, it was nice to be able to sleep in the same bed as Jess for an entire night, the organizational requirements of our new Kitties mean that I don't get to cuddle her as much as I'd like.

Oh, and I got to meet Jessie's mom's new dog, Tea. He's a sweetie, and a definite lap dog. He fell asleep on my lap a couple of times while I petted him.

Saturday I mostly just hung out with the boys and played video games. Jess had a much, much, MUCH busier day. First she went out and got her hair done in preparation for the wedding. They did it up all pretty, and it looked real nice, even if there were about 50 bobby pins involved. After that, she went off for 'girl-time' lunch and then met up with some friends for a BACHELORETTE PARTY! They went off and had alcohol and rode a mechanical bull. I, for my bachelor party, merely played in the pool, did a few levels of Lego Indiana Jones (when the boys weren't trying to 'show me something' they could do) and then watched TV until the girls got home. Jess's sister got her belly button pierced and Jess that that was *so crazy*. Then sleep.

I woke up and hung out with the family some more, Jess, on the other hand, spent most of the morning curled up in bed with post-alcohol-consumption disorder. Quoth Jessie: "well, I'm getting married, so thank goodness I won't have to do this ever again.' I also got to be, and I'm quoting here, 'the Best Fiance Ever' by taking care of my girl while she convalesced and got up enough energy to get to the airport and fly home.

How was your weekend?

Enjoy and let me know what you think.

Worn down

What a weekend. It started Saturday morning. When I went to sleep in the guest bedroom, Nagano was in there with me. When I woke up, Jess and Tigger were in there, and Jess was trying to feed Tigger some Hot dog.

It turned out that Tigger had hurt himself somehow. We suspect by jumping off the top of the cat condo while being a fat kitty. His back legs were giving him grief. He didn't even want any food. Now that's a sore Tigger. He got better pretty quickly, though, but we've been keeping him and Nagano separated all the time for a while. I don't think Tigger's in the mood for any shenannegans.

After helping him settle in, we went out to watch WANTED with Tabi and Jeff, who are taking care of our cats for us over the 4th of july weekend while we're in Florida. I really liked it. Lots of very creative, very silly action. Way fun.

[;'=[]o009. Nagano typed that.

After that we came back home and picked up the first few round of response cards sent back from invitations. It's pretty fun to open those things up, even if we mostly have 'no's.'

Today, Sunday, we woke up and went off to do some morning swimming. Arobics are supposed to be better for you on an empty stomach, but doing 2200 meters in the pool before breakfast makes me tired.

After that we went to the mall where we did some looking around and got the Tuxedoes set up for everyone. I'll send out e-mails for that later to the effected parties.

Then we came home and OH MAN I WAS SO TIRED I FELL ASLEEP. Untill Nagano and Tigger started harrying each other under the door. Keeping the two of them apart is almost as much work as keeping them civil when they're together.

Nagano went to the vet this week, too. In three weeks, he gets his last vaccinations and a little bit of 'elective surgery'.

Love and naps.
