And I haven't even blogged about it! Mom and Dad came to visit, and we did a million fun things- shopping at Ikea, eating Ethiopian, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean, looking for bathroom lights for the parents house, not going to work, visiting Fallngwater- what a hoot! As a result, I have a new light in my living room and a fridge full of doggie bags. Hooray! I also got to show off my new wood-fired ceramics, which mostly turned out really cool. I'll work on getting some pictures of this up, they have a very organic look which is different from what I've done in the past.
I didn't get pictures from Fallingwater, hopefully Mom and Dad will post some.
Everything is fine now, but a consequence of cleaning up and looking at all these new ceramics, I managed to chip a piece of glass into my eye on Saturday, a few hours before Dad got to town. It wasn't very painful, but it never did feel right until we went to the Optometrist on Wednesday and Dad held my hand (and head) while the doc used his deadly sharp tweezers to yank the glass shard off the front of my eye. And yes, I could see that. Thank god Dad was there, or I much more likely would have had a long procedure to remove the tweezers from my face. Eyeball is fine now- but don't forget to wear safety goggles!
It is also really nice to have the folks around for normal things like sharing meals and hanging out, makes me excited about going home for Christmas!

My Excuse
I know it has been a while since I posted- but face it, it's been a while since you posted to. I've been spending a lot of time preparing for my first annual thesis committee meeting and my departmental seminar. BOTH this Friday. Wish me luck. If you have a lot of free time on your hands, I can share my powerpoint slides and you can see the GROSS pictures of diseases caused by my viruses that Dad helped me find, and appreciate the consistency of capitalization in my titles- since I know Dr. Boss does.
Head's up- I have major plans to SLEEP before I get to update on MomanDad's Most Excellent Adventure in Steel City.

Baseball Season 2
Sorry I didn't update about the end of season one. Gordie's team ended up in second place. And Gordie scored several times. What a hero!
The second season started on Monday, July 28. They were set to play two games. The final scores were Bruisers Too beating Bar Flies 17-8 ( this is a group of lawyers) and Bruisers Too winning again against Local 52 Terminators 9-5 (a group of ...locals). But the sad news is that Gordie suffered an injury in the first game. As he caught a ball at first for an out he turned and did something bad to his calf muscle. So he was out for the rest of the evening. His leg is kind of puffy and he walks really funny so we will see if he is able to bounce back enough to continue to play.
I hope he can keep playing, this group has done some nice barbeques.

More Baseball Scores
Time to update you on the lastest with the Bartlett Bruisers Too. Gordie's team won again!Tthe score was 13 - 3. Gordie had two RBIs and made some good catches. They are already thinking about season 2 which begins on July 21. We will need to check out our construction schedule before Gordie decides if he wants to make a further commitment. Next week there will be two games.

Baseball Update
Gordie had a game last night. The final score was 18 to 10 with Bruisers Too winning again! Gordie got a few runners out on first and had a walk and at least one run is accreditted to him. Afterward was a barbeque in the parking lot and I met a few of his very nice team mates. There is one player who does not eat pork so he could not eat our (now famous) baked beans.

Plaaaay Ball!
Gordie had two games last night and his team (Bartlett Bruisers Too) won both games. Against the Troopers the score was 14-13, and against the JPD Busters, 13-5. I watched the first game and saw Gordie get a base hit and scored a run, get quite a few people out at first and got knocked down and fall down a couple of times all in the attempt to be a great team player. I didn't see the second game but heard that Gordie scored a double play! And he got a few runs in that game, too. The weather was overcast but no rain, very pleasant.
My impression of this level of league play.... scoring is flexible with each team keeping track of their own scores, the umpire is casual but fair and everyone cheers when anyone makes a good play regardless of the team. I tried to keep score at the first game and my numbers did not match what was eventually decided, as I said the scoring is flexible.
Gordie is on a great team. Everyone watches and encourage each other. People enjoy just getting out to play and are surprised when someone other than the ball players watch the game.
I will keep you posted on further games.
