I don't generally inflict my deep engagment with current affairs (aka.], "rabid political obsessions") on what is clearly a family-type blog. But I have to ask my Alaska connections for any deep background they can offer re your recent primary.
1. The Sitka mayor? Has Dr. G ever chatted with him at the airport?
2. I recall hearing from Sandlin that Lisa Murkowski stopped by her poster session and had a pleasant, intelligent conversation with her. Am I remembering this correctly? Is there a 30-second summary of why her peeps might want to dump her? (I can't even tell from the news online if the outcome's official yet, so forgive my ignorance if I'm behind the times.)
And now let us return to our regular programming . . .

By all accounts, the AK Dems weren't going to waste a lot of resources fighting a popular incumbant, so the Sitka mayor was on his own, hoping to pull a Palin as a small town mayor who makes it big. Personally don't know him at all. He may get some legs against the Miller candidacy who comes off as a pretty reactionary Palinesque creature on his own: Close the Dept of Ed, Go to the grave 2nd amendment support, fiscal conservative, etc...
My theory is that A very low turn-out primary allowed some driven pro-life/pro-gun/tea-baggers to hijack the expected result and now the dems have an opening. The question in my mind is whether Lisa wants to pull a Lieberman and get on another ballot with the eyes of the whole state and nation watching the campaign. If you're keeping track, this is about the only election that Momma Grizzley had any success. So embarassing...
You recall correctly, Bart. Of all the entrenched Alaska Legislators, Lisa was the only one who took the time to meet with me. Murkowski has proven herself to be more of a pro-business Republican, not the libertarian-leaning tea party type. (And, Dad, you do know that "Teabaggers" is not complimentary?) I mean, she did help forgive Exxon's debt to Alaska. But, I don't follow the details enough to imagine why they would try to strong arm her out of office.
And, arguably, anyone living in Sitka is going to be a relative unknown.
My "tea-bagger" reference was to the redneck republicans that attacked Lisa for not being fascist enough and got their wish with a republican nomination that would make Palin proud. This is a very difficult state to handle politically. You cannot be anything but pro-gun, dem or republican. You have to be in jail before your ethics will be questioned. I could have lived just fine with Lisa, now we're in limbo with very shaky options...
