A challenge:Travel Wish List

Hi, My name is Sandlin, and I have insatiable wanderlust.

In part, this is to blame on the World Map we put up behind our couch. It passively reminds us about the vast swaths of the earth that we have never been remotely close to stepping foot in. Part of this is to blame on Dr. Rockstar, too. Today in lab meeting he announced that in addition to the pending travel arrangements with the Aussies, he'd need to start planning a trip to Malawi and Madagascar. I want to go to Madagascar! It is on my life list.

This of course marinates in an atmosphere that is very forgiving of those with wanderlust. My baymate Teresa and I are planning our next trip to NYC this spring. My siblings are ALWAYS going to really exciting places. Our trip to Mexico was long anticipated- it was basically my 'finished comps' gift and Finish Teaching incentive. And that was wonderful! And easy! And I want to do it again. And more!

I wonder about having this conversation with my boss- how much do I have to get done here to justify taking huge chunks of time away?

For the moment I am coping with these urges by watching the map instead of the TV, and making lists. Tonight, we made a list of our Top 10ish Travel Destinations- one for domestic location, one for international. These are places we think we might be able to get to in the next say, 3 years- politically stable, affordable, exciting, exotic locations. Except for Cleveland, which is none of the above.

I'll publish the lists IF you'll meet my challenge, loyal readers. Let's call this the first of many future Blog challenges to encourage discussion and commentary. Dear Readers, your challenge is this: throw up your own lists. Doesn't have to be 10 (we couldn't get our lists that narrow), or in order, any entry will qualify. Maybe we'll all have somewhere in common we can all go to next. Let's share a travel daydream.

OK- Here're my lists, alphabetical:
Australia?New Zealand
Belize
Brazil
Copper Canyon, MX
Galapagos Is
Greece
Iceland
Ireland/Scotland
India
Nova Scotia
Thailand

and
Arizona
Colorado
New Mexico
N/S Carolinas
W Va
Utah

Maybe Nova Scotia and Copper Canyon should be considered "domestic" because they're really not far away from the US. Note that some of these places, namely Belize, Arizona, New Mexico are in warm climates! Converging one of those places in December would solve the question of "which parents to spend the holidays with" and minimize snow shoveling as well. People could come and go depending on how much free time available. Understand that there are private homes and lodges available by the week for just that purpose. Hmmm?

Well, I'm not so well organized as Betty, I've more of a free floating series of ambitions. First, we want to visit our children in their current native habitats, so that suggests Texas sooner than later. I'd really like to see some part of Italy which I'm sure will overwhelm me with history and mystery. South Africa and India have moved way up my romance scale since reading about Kelsey's adventures there. Though I should let Connie speak for herself, I know she wants to consider taking her mother to Ireland and I would like to be invited. We watched the Galapagos star in our recent viewing of "Master and Commander" blu-ray and it seemed properly exotic. I would love to see red lava in a place that wouldn't risk my life: Mt. Aetna, Costa Rica, Hawaii??? Greece from a slow moving cruise ship sounds very comfortable. I'd love to see the Pyramids but not during the conflagrations in Gaza. So that touches 10-ish places by my count in no particular order. When is the Formula-one season in Italy? Wouldn't that be an interesting combination of experiences??

To answer my own question, in 2009 for instance, the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza course north of Milan is 11-13 September. 3-day grandstand passes which give access to all the jumbotron screens and a one-day pre-race pit-pass go for something like $450-500/person. Now that's a way to temper cathedral/museum watching with hair-raising excitement for some, eh?? Australia is March, malasia april, brazil in October. One needs to explore options...GP

Yeah, I think F1 or WRC trip would be a pretty exciting way to combine interests. Good list you two!
